On January 31st, 2024, he signed the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan.

• In his personal statement within the Plan he expressed how eager he was to improve the DEI policies of the Coast Guard as well as his commitment to the core principles of DEI.
• Johnston reiterated fired Commandant Linda Fagan’s narrative that “Inclusion is an operational imperative.”
• Johnson said: “Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) is everyone’s business and a community effort” and “Enhancing the cultural competence across the CGA Community to create a greater sense of belonging and deliver officers capable of interacting effectively across cultures is paramount.”​
