Professor of Sociology, U.S. Military Academy at West Point
⚠ Key Findings
- 1Co-Director of USMA's Diversity and Inclusion Studies Minor. In a video interview advocating for transgender servicemembers, Ender — identified as a West Point professor — claimed there is "still institutional racism, institutional sexism, and institutional homophobia" in the military, equating the historical struggle for racial integration with the current transgender movement.
- 2Served as point of contact for courses including "Deconstructing Patriotism" and "Cross-Dressing in the Military." Taught classes titled "Deviance and Social Control" and "Race, Class, Gender, and Ethnicity," and has written multiple books on military "inclusion" and "diversity."
- 3Conducted research placing West Point cadets in recorded focus groups to discuss transgender issues, then published their statements. His conclusion called for "ongoing support, encouragement, and undertaking of research on diversity topics" with special focus on what he labeled QUILTBAG identities, concluding that West Point "cannot afford to be a diversity champion on one front only to lose on the inclusion front."
- 4Participated in the Earthquake Science Center's Diversity Working Group and gave a seminar to the U.S. Geological Society on seven contested social characteristics in American society and the military, including intersectionality and what he termed an "ongoing citizenship revolution."
