- In a written statement testifying before the congressional subcommittee of military personnel, he wrote…
- (Our Goal) is to “Build Diverse and Effective Winning Teams: Continuing to adapt efforts to build a diverse and inclusive Corps, staff, and faculty” and “Through West Point’s Leadership, Ethics and Diversity in STEM Workshops, we engage with middle and high school students…”
- Gilland admits in testimony to Congress that USMA had race-based composition goals: 1hr 49 minute time frame—answer to Congressman Jim Banks.
- Removed the “Duty, Honor, Country” motto from the West Point Mission Statement
- He said the decision was supported by former Army Sec. Christine Wormuth who is known for her DEI advocacy.
- Hosted and directed multiple West Point Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion conferences:
- Gilland said “Teams where every member’s experience and talents, the sum total of what makes each person unique, are being utilized and leveraged to accomplish the mission. Cohesive teams are both diverse and inclusive, where every voice matters,” (19th Annual DEI Conference)
- Gilland hosted West Point’s biggest-ever DEI conference, at which he described diversity in terms of “how important and how critical it is not only to our U.S. Military Academy, to our military, but especially to our nation.”
- Gilland promoted the theme of the DEI conference: “Shaping Tomorrow’s Defense: The Intersection of Diversity Innovation, and National Defense.” He said it aligned with the year’s academy-wide intellectual theme.
