Posted: July 16, 2025
- Co-Director of USMA’s Diversity and Inclusion Studies Minor
- In a video interview advocating for transgenders in the military, Ender, using his title as “Professor of Sociology at West Point” said “within the military there is still institutional racism, there is institutional sexism, there is institutional homophobia.” He equates the struggles of blacks to achieve integration in the military with the current transgender movement.

- Ender was point of contact for courses such as Deconstructing Patriotism and Cross-Dressing in the Military
- In 2022, Ender wrote an article titled, “The Military is a Social Institution.”
- He taught classes titled: “Deviance and Social Control” and Race, Class, Gender, and Ethnicity”
- He has written many books on military “inclusion” and “diversity”
- Conducted research on West Point Cadets regarding views on transgenderism. Cadets in psychology and military leadership classes were put into focus groups where they had to give recorded interviews. Their statements were published in the research paper. Ender’s conclusion was: “there must be ongoing support, encouragement, and undertaking of research on diversity topics. The focus on especially nuanced topics associated with invisible sexual and gendered minorities including queer, undecided, intersexed, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, asexual, and gay (QUILTBAG) is warranted, given the proclivity for groups to be silenced in organizations.” He ended the research paper saying, “Clearly, West Point and the U.S. Army cannot afford to be a diversity champion on one front only to lose on the inclusion front.”
- Ender was part of the Earthquake Science Center’s Diversity Working Group. He gave a seminar for the U.S. Geological Society on “Seven major social characteristics are consistently contested in American society: race/ethnicity; sex/gender; sexual orientation; religious affiliation; age; socio-economic status; and (dis)ability. I will briefly discuss these seven areas in American society and in the U.S. military. Additionally, I will touch upon intersectionality, rugged individualism, and the ongoing citizenship revolution in the U.S.”
